How to Fit Your Gregory Pack
If there's one thing we could leave you with, it's this: don't size your pack like your t-shirt, size it like your shoes. A well-fitted pack allows you to stay comfortable and use less energy on the trail — letting you get the most out of every trip.
It also allows you to use your pack correctly and to fill it to its maximum capacity. Both things help you get optimal performance and enjoyment — not only out of your pack, but out of yourself and the outdoors.
Step 01Step 1: Measure Your Torso Length
Grab a soft measuring tape. Tilt your head forward to find the highest protruding vertebra at the base of your neck — that's your C7. Run the tape straight down your spine to your Iliac Centre, the point that aligns with the top of your hipbone. That measurement is your torso length.
Step 02Step 2: Pick Your Pack
Once you know your torso length, match it to the Gregory size chart to find your ideal pack size. All Gregory packs are sized consistently regardless of gender — so a Medium is a Medium across men's, women's, and unisex styles.
Step 03Step 3: Try On the Pack
Always test with some weight — ideally 5–9 kg loaded. The top edge of the hipbelt should sit 2.5 cm above your iliac crest. Shoulder straps should wrap smoothly over your shoulders and begin curving onto your back about 8 cm below your shoulder tops. Lower than that? Go up a size.

Remember: the goal is to transfer the pack's load to your hips, not carry it all on your shoulders. A correctly adjusted pack should feel like an extension of your body.

Each strap and buckle on a Gregory pack has a specific job. Here's what each one does and how to set it correctly.
Hipbelt
The hipbelt is the most important piece of the whole system. It allows you to carry the weight of your pack on your hips rather than your shoulders — which is far less fatiguing over long distances. Position the hipbelt pad so its top edge sits 2.5 cm (1 inch) above your iliac crest.
Shoulder Strap
These should form naturally to the contours of your shoulders and rest fully against them. The strap should begin wrapping around your back about 8 cm below the top of your shoulder blade. If the wrap point is lower, try a larger size pack.
Sternum Strap
This strap clips across your chest at roughly heart-height. Its job is to keep the shoulder straps correctly positioned on your body. It should not distort the shape of the shoulder strap or restrict your breathing — adjust accordingly.
Load Lifter Strap
Critical and often overlooked, load lifter straps connect the top of the shoulder strap to the top of the pack. Tightening them pulls the pack's weight toward your centre of gravity, reducing strain. They work together with the hipbelt to let you shift weight between hips and shoulders throughout your tramp.
Transfer Weight to Hipbelt
To shift more weight onto your hips: loosen your shoulder strap adjustment, then tighten the load lifter straps. This takes weight from your shoulder straps and moves it to your hipbelt — ideal when you're grinding up a long climb and want your legs doing the work.
Transfer Weight to Shoulder Straps
To move weight back to your shoulders: loosen the load lifter straps at the top of the shoulder strap, then tighten the shoulder strap adjustment. This is useful on descents where hip stability matters more and shoulder carrying is comfortable.

One Size
Some Gregory packs come in a single size designed to accommodate a wide range of torso lengths and body shapes. No need to worry about S/M/L — one size fits all, with plenty of adjustment built in.
Adjustable (S / M / L)
Adjustable packs come in three sizes with each accommodating a range of torso lengths. For example, a Medium typically fits torso lengths of 38–48 cm. Use your torso measurement to find the right size for your body.
Custom Fit
Premium Gregory packs like the Baltoro feature swappable hipbelt and harness components, allowing you to mix sizes for the perfect personal fit. Start with your torso length for the bag size, then customise harness and hipbelt independently.
