Freestanding Dome Tent with Inner-Pitch-First Design

The Wild Country Axis 2 is a freestanding, 3 season, 2 person dome tent designed for backpackers who want a straightforward shelter that pitches fast and handles mixed weather confidently. At 2.55kg packed, it sits in a practical middle ground between ultralight minimalism and heavy car-camping tents.

The dome shape gives the Axis 2 noticeably better headroom than tunnel tents at a similar weight. The inner-pitch-first design means you can set the inner tent up on its own in fine weather for a light, airy shelter, or add the flysheet when conditions change. Two doors and two porches give both occupants their own entry point and space to stash gear.

Designed by Terra Nova's UK team, the Axis 2 sits in Wild Country's Classic Series. It is a strong all-rounder for 3 season tramping, camping, and cycle touring across New Zealand.

Key Features

Freestanding dome design. The one-piece H-frame pole set (two long poles with a shorter cross-piece) creates a stable, self-supporting dome that stands without pegs. You can pick the tent up and move it to find a better spot before pegging out. This is a major advantage on hard ground, tent platforms, and rocky campsites.

Inner-pitch-first. Unlike flysheet-first designs, the Axis 2 lets you pitch the inner tent on its own. In good weather, you can use just the inner for maximum ventilation. When rain arrives, clip the flysheet over the top. This flexibility is particularly useful in New Zealand's changeable conditions where a clear morning can turn wet by afternoon.

Good headroom. The dome shape creates more vertical space than a tunnel tent at the same weight. Most people can sit up comfortably inside, which makes a real difference on multi-day trips when you are spending time in the tent during bad weather.

Two doors and two porches. Front and rear entry points mean neither occupant has to climb over the other to get in and out. Both porches provide space for packs, boots, and cooking gear.

68D polyester ripstop flysheet (4,000mm HH). The Stormtex flysheet is fully taped at all seams. The 68D fabric is more robust than lighter 20D nylon, making it more resistant to tears and abrasion. The 4,000mm hydrostatic head rating handles sustained heavy rain.

68D polyester groundsheet (5,000mm HH). The Aqua Stop groundsheet keeps water out even on saturated ground. The 5,000mm rating provides strong protection against pooling water and wet campsites.

Extensive ventilation. Mesh panels across the inner tent allow airflow through the sleeping area. Combined with flysheet vents, this helps manage condensation on humid nights and during shoulder-season camping.

Oversized tarp-style stuff sack. The pull-cord stuff sack is deliberately larger than a standard tube bag, making it faster and easier to pack the tent away. No more wrestling wet fabric into a tight bag on a rainy morning.

Real-World Use Case

The Axis 2 is a natural fit for 3 season tramping across New Zealand. It works well on Great Walk tracks like the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, Tongariro Northern Circuit, and Lake Waikaremoana, where campsites often have firm or mixed ground and a freestanding tent gives you the flexibility to set up anywhere.

The inner-pitch-first design suits NZ's variable weather patterns. Start with just the inner on a clear evening at a DOC campsite, then clip the flysheet on when the forecast turns. The 68D polyester fabric is tougher than the lighter nylon used on ultralight tents, which means less worry about accidental tears from branches, rough ground, or pack straps.

At 2.55kg and 52 x 20cm packed, the Axis 2 is heavier and bulkier than tunnel alternatives like the Blizzard 2 (2.35kg, 32 x 19cm). The trade-off is better headroom, freestanding convenience, and dual entry. If minimum weight is your priority, the Blizzard 2 is lighter. If liveability and ease of use matter more, the Axis 2 is the better pick.

Worth noting: the dome design handles wind well thanks to its curved profile, but the doors and porches are on the smaller side. Taller users may find the entry a bit snug. The six guyline points provide solid stability when pegged out, and reviewers consistently recommend guying the tent out in anything more than mild conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Wild Country Axis 2 freestanding?

Yes. The H-frame pole set creates a self-supporting dome that stands on its own without pegs. You should still peg it out and use guylines for stability in wind, but the tent can be moved and repositioned before being secured.

Can I pitch just the inner tent without the flysheet?

Yes. The inner-pitch-first design means the inner tent goes up on its own. In clear weather you can use just the inner for maximum airflow. Clip the flysheet over the top when conditions change.

How does the Axis 2 compare to the Blizzard 2?

The Axis 2 is a freestanding 3 season dome (2.55kg, 2 doors, 2 porches, better headroom, inner-pitch-first). The Blizzard 2 is a non-freestanding 4 season tunnel (2.35kg, 1 door, 1 porch, lower profile, fly-and-inner pitch together). Choose the Axis 2 for 3 season liveability and freestanding convenience. Choose the Blizzard 2 for 4 season protection, lower weight, and better performance in extreme wind.

How does the Axis 2 compare to the Panacea 2?

Both are freestanding 3 season 2 person tents with 2 doors and 2 porches. The Axis 2 is lighter (2.55kg vs 2.85kg), uses an inner-pitch-first design, and has a dome shape with better headroom. The Panacea 2 uses a hub pole system that creates more usable floor space and offers trekking pole compatibility for extra bracing. The Axis 2 is the better choice if weight and versatility are priorities. The Panacea 2 suits trampers who value interior space and trekking pole stability.

Is there enough headroom to sit up inside?

Yes. The dome shape provides noticeably more headroom than tunnel tents at this weight. Most users can sit up comfortably. Reviewers over 6ft (183cm) report the headroom is adequate though the doors can feel snug when entering and exiting.

Is this tent suitable for winter tramping in New Zealand?

The Axis 2 is rated for 3 seasons (spring through autumn). It handles cold temperatures and heavy rain well but is not designed for sustained high winds, snow loading, or exposed alpine conditions. For winter or above-the-bushline use, the Blizzard 2 is a better choice.

How long does it take to pitch?

Most users report pitching the Axis 2 in under 10 minutes. The one-piece pole set is straightforward once you are familiar with it. First-time setup may take a little longer as you learn where the cross-piece sits relative to the long poles.

Should I use the guylines even on calm nights?

Reviewers consistently recommend guying the tent out in anything more than very mild conditions. The six guyline attachment points provide solid stability and help the flysheet sit properly, which improves ventilation and reduces condensation.

Wild Country — Gear Standards

Technologies

The materials, treatments, and design standards built into Wild Country gear — and why they matter on the trail.

Solution Dyed Fabrics icon
Sustainability

Solution Dyed Fabrics

What Is Solution Dyeing?

Solution dyeing adds pigments directly to the polymer solution before the yarn is formed. Unlike traditional dyeing — which soaks finished fabric in dye baths — solution dyeing locks colour in at the fibre level.

Why It's Better for the Planet

80–90% less water used

No rinsing or dye baths needed

Less energy consumption

No repeated heating or drying cycles

Fewer chemicals

No dyes, mordants, or effluents

Performance Benefits

Fade Resistance

Colour embedded in fibre — won't wash out or fade under UV

Improved Durability

Fabrics are often stronger and more abrasion-resistant

Cleaner Supply Chain

Less wastewater, fewer emissions, more consistent results

Trekking Pole Compatible icon
Design

Trekking Pole Compatible

Versatility for minimalist, fast-and-light adventures.

Some Wild Country shelters are designed to be pitched using standard trekking poles, removing the need for dedicated tent poles and reducing pack weight.

Benefits

Simplified packing

Fewer components to carry or lose

Lighter overall load

Ideal for thru-hikers, fastpackers, and ultralight travellers

Dual-use gear

Trekking poles double as structural support

Look for this feature on select tarp tents, bivvies, and minimalist shelters across the Wild Country range.

PFC-Free Treatments

What Are PFCs?

PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) are man-made chemicals used to create water, oil, and stain-resistant finishes in outdoor gear. While effective, they persist in the environment and are slow to break down.

Environmental & Health Concerns

Persistent in nature

PFCs don't degrade easily — trace amounts found in water, soil, and wildlife worldwide

Bioaccumulative

Some PFCs build up in human and animal tissue, raising long-term health concerns

Increasingly regulated

Regulations tightening globally, with many brands phasing out long-chain PFCs

Does PFC-Free mean less performance?

No. Wild Country's in-house and third-party testing ensures all waterproof garments and tent flysheets meet rigorous hydrostatic head and repellency standards — with or without PFCs.

Recycled Materials icon
Sustainability

Recycled Materials

What Are Recycled Materials in Outdoor Gear?

Recycled materials in Wild Country products primarily come from post-consumer waste — such as used plastic bottles — processed into high-quality polyester fibres, then spun into durable, lightweight fabrics.

Where Recycled Materials Are Used

Extremities Gloves & Hats

Many styles include 90%+ recycled fabric content with no compromise on warmth, waterproofing, or wind resistance

Select Tents & Accessories

Recycled textiles or trims incorporated without compromising tear strength, weight, or weather resistance

Why It Matters

Reduces Waste

Diverts plastic waste from landfill and gives it a second life

Lowers Carbon Footprint

Recycled polyester can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 30% vs virgin polyester

Supports Circular Design

Moving toward gear that minimises resource use without compromising performance
