Ultralight 2 Person Tent Inspired by the Terra Nova Laser Range
The Wild Country Halny Elite 2 is the lightest 2 person tent in the Wild Country range. At just 1.59kg max weight (1.45kg minimum), it borrows its single-pole architecture from Terra Nova's award-winning Laser series and pairs it with recycled, PFC-free materials throughout the flysheet, inner, and groundsheet.
New for 2025, the Halny Elite 2 is designed for trampers, thru-hikers, and endurance athletes who count every gram. The fast-pitching fly-and-inner system goes up quickly, the dual doors provide easy access for both occupants, and the zippered flysheet opens up for trekking pole awning setups that extend your sheltered space without adding weight to your pack.
This tent sits at the top of Wild Country's Specialist Series. It is not a stripped-back ultralight compromise. The 4,000mm HH flysheet, 5,000mm HH groundsheet, and Superflex alloy poles deliver genuine weather protection at a weight that most 1 person tents struggle to match.
Key Features
1.59kg max weight (1.45kg min). The lightest 2 person tent Wild Country makes. The combination of 20D nylon ripstop flysheet, 20D recycled polyester inner, and 70D recycled polyester groundsheet keeps weight to a minimum without sacrificing waterproof performance. For context, many competing 2 person tents at this price point weigh 2.3 to 2.8kg.
Single-pole structure with cross-brace. A proven design drawn from the Terra Nova Laser range. The main 8.5mm Superflex alloy pole creates the primary tunnel structure, with an 8mm cross-pole adding width and stability at the apex. The result is a tent that holds its shape in wind while remaining fast to pitch.
Recycled, PFC-free materials throughout. The flysheet, inner, and groundsheet all use recycled fabrics with PFC-free water repellent treatments. PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) are persistent environmental pollutants traditionally used in outdoor gear. Wild Country's PFC-free treatments deliver equivalent waterproof performance (4,000mm HH flysheet, 5,000mm HH groundsheet) without the environmental cost. The flysheet also uses solution dyed fabric, which reduces water consumption in manufacturing by 80 to 90%.
Dual trekking pole awning capability. The zippered flysheet opens on both sides to accept standard trekking poles, creating sheltered awning areas for cooking, gear storage, or ventilation. The awning setup adds usable covered space without carrying extra weight. Tuck the pole handle into the flysheet pocket with the tip in the ground.
Dual side doors. Two full-size doors mean neither occupant has to climb over the other. Both doors improve cross-ventilation when open and provide separate access points in bad weather.
Enhanced ventilation. Multiple tie-back sections on the flysheet create additional airflow options beyond the standard door openings. Side vent hoods maintain airflow even when the tent is fully closed. This layered ventilation system is designed to reduce condensation on cold or humid nights.
Fly-and-inner pitch together. The inner clips to the flysheet so the whole tent goes up as one unit. No exposed inner getting soaked in the rain. The single-pole design means pitching is fast, typically under 8 minutes for experienced users.
Spacious 222 x 117cm inner. The 222cm length accommodates taller users comfortably. The 117cm width provides adequate side-by-side sleeping space for two. The 88cm peak height is sufficient for sitting up.
Dyneema reflective guylines. Four grey Dyneema reflective guylines are lighter and stronger than standard polyester guylines. Dyneema has virtually zero stretch, which means the guylines hold their tension without needing constant re-tightening.
Real-World Use Case
The Halny Elite 2 is built for fast-and-light trips where weight matters. Think multi-day sections of the Te Araroa, running the Hump Ridge Track, fastpacking the Queen Charlotte, or any trip where you are covering big distances and want your shelter to take up as little of your weight budget as possible.
At 1.59kg and 34 x 19cm packed, this tent disappears into the bottom of a 35 to 45L pack. Split the weight between two people and each person carries under 800g of shelter. That is a transformative difference on long days over technical terrain.
The recycled PFC-free materials are not just an environmental talking point. They perform. The 4,000mm HH flysheet handles sustained NZ rain, the 70D recycled groundsheet is tougher than you would expect at this weight, and the solution dyed fabrics resist UV fading better than conventionally dyed alternatives.
The trekking pole awning is a genuine feature, not a gimmick. On a fine evening at a DOC campsite, zip open the flysheet, prop it up with your trekking poles, and you have a sheltered cooking and socialising area without any extra gear. In rain, the awning creates a covered porch for boot removal and gear staging that the tent's single porch would otherwise lack.
Trade-offs to be aware of: this is a single-pole tunnel tent and is not freestanding. You must peg it out to pitch it. The 20D nylon flysheet is lighter than the 68D polyester used on the Blizzard 2 or Trident 2, which means it is less puncture-resistant, so take care around sharp branches and rough ground. For heavier-duty conditions or winter use, the Blizzard 2 or Trident 2 are better suited.

Sustainability
The Halny Elite 2 is one of the most environmentally considered tents in the Wild Country range. Every fabric component uses recycled materials and PFC-free water repellent treatments. The flysheet uses solution dyed nylon, which reduces water use in the dyeing process by 80 to 90% and produces fabrics that are more abrasion-resistant and colour-fast than conventionally dyed alternatives. These are not cosmetic changes. They represent a measurable reduction in the tent's environmental footprint without compromising on-trail performance.
Warranty
Wild Country products are guaranteed to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship for 2 years from purchase. Terra Nova Equipment will also replace alloy poles for any reason, including accidental breakages, within 2 years of purchasing a new Wild Country tent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Halny Elite 2 weigh only 1.59kg for a 2 person tent?
The weight savings come from the 20D nylon ripstop flysheet (lighter than the 68D polyester used on heavier Wild Country models), the 20D recycled polyester inner, lighter Superflex alloy poles (including an 8mm cross-brace rather than 8.5mm), Dyneema guylines, and fewer pegs (11 vs 16 on the Trident 2). Every component has been specified to reduce weight while maintaining functional waterproof and structural performance.
Is the Halny Elite 2 freestanding?
No. It is a single-pole tunnel tent and must be pegged out to pitch. On hard ground, you will need rocks or deadman anchors. This is standard for ultralight tents in this weight class.
How does the trekking pole awning work?
The flysheet has zippered sections on both sides. Unzip a section, prop it open with a standard trekking pole (handle into the flysheet pocket, tip in the ground), and you create a sheltered awning area. You can set up one or both sides depending on conditions. The awning adds covered space for cooking, gear storage, or ventilation without carrying extra weight.
Are the recycled PFC-free materials as waterproof as standard materials?
Yes. The flysheet is rated to 4,000mm HH and the groundsheet to 5,000mm HH, which are the same ratings as Wild Country's heavier tents. Wild Country and Terra Nova test all PFC-free treatments against the same hydrostatic head and water repellency standards as their conventional products.
How does the Halny Elite 2 compare to the Blizzard 2?
The Halny Elite 2 (1.59kg, 3 season) is nearly 800g lighter than the Blizzard 2 (2.35kg, 4 season). The Halny Elite 2 has 2 doors (vs 1), uses recycled PFC-free materials, and offers trekking pole awning capability. The Blizzard 2 has a heavier-duty 68D flysheet, a more storm-resistant low profile, and a true 4 season rating. Choose the Halny Elite 2 for 3 season fast-and-light trips. Choose the Blizzard 2 for winter and exposed alpine conditions.
How does it compare to the Axis 2 and Panacea 2?
The Halny Elite 2 is significantly lighter than both the Axis 2 (2.55kg) and Panacea 2 (2.85kg). Both of those tents are freestanding, which the Halny Elite 2 is not. The Axis 2 offers better headroom in a dome design. The Panacea 2 offers the most interior space with its hub pole system. The Halny Elite 2 sacrifices freestanding capability and some interior volume in exchange for a nearly 1kg weight saving.
Is the 20D flysheet durable enough for regular use?
The 20D nylon ripstop with silicone/polyurethane coating is a proven fabric used across many ultralight tents including the Terra Nova Laser range. It is lighter and less puncture-resistant than 68D polyester, so take care around sharp branches, rough ground, and when packing. With reasonable care, a 20D flysheet will last for years of regular tramping use.
Will two tall people fit comfortably?
The inner measures 222cm long and 117cm wide with an 88cm peak height. The 222cm length is generous and accommodates most users comfortably. The 117cm width is adequate for two people side by side with sleeping mats but is not overly spacious. If both occupants are broad-shouldered, it will feel snug.
Can I buy a footprint separately?
Yes. A compatible footprint is available separately. Using a footprint extends the life of the groundsheet by protecting it from abrasion and sharp objects, and helps keep the underside clean.

Wild Country — Gear Standards
Technologies
The materials, treatments, and design standards built into Wild Country gear — and why they matter on the trail.
Solution Dyed Fabrics
What Is Solution Dyeing?
Solution dyeing adds pigments directly to the polymer solution before the yarn is formed. Unlike traditional dyeing — which soaks finished fabric in dye baths — solution dyeing locks colour in at the fibre level.
Why It's Better for the Planet
80–90% less water used
No rinsing or dye baths needed
Less energy consumption
No repeated heating or drying cycles
Fewer chemicals
No dyes, mordants, or effluents
Performance Benefits
Fade Resistance
Colour embedded in fibre — won't wash out or fade under UV
Improved Durability
Fabrics are often stronger and more abrasion-resistant
Cleaner Supply Chain
Less wastewater, fewer emissions, more consistent results

Trekking Pole Compatible
Versatility for minimalist, fast-and-light adventures.
Some Wild Country shelters are designed to be pitched using standard trekking poles, removing the need for dedicated tent poles and reducing pack weight.

Dual-use gear
Trekking poles double as structural support
Look for this feature on select tarp tents, bivvies, and minimalist shelters across the Wild Country range.

PFC-Free Treatments
What Are PFCs?
PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) are man-made chemicals used to create water, oil, and stain-resistant finishes in outdoor gear. While effective, they persist in the environment and are slow to break down.
Environmental & Health Concerns
Persistent in nature
PFCs don't degrade easily — trace amounts found in water, soil, and wildlife worldwide
Bioaccumulative
Some PFCs build up in human and animal tissue, raising long-term health concerns
Increasingly regulated
Regulations tightening globally, with many brands phasing out long-chain PFCs
Does PFC-Free mean less performance?
No. Wild Country's in-house and third-party testing ensures all waterproof garments and tent flysheets meet rigorous hydrostatic head and repellency standards — with or without PFCs.
Recycled Materials
What Are Recycled Materials in Outdoor Gear?
Recycled materials in Wild Country products primarily come from post-consumer waste — such as used plastic bottles — processed into high-quality polyester fibres, then spun into durable, lightweight fabrics.
Where Recycled Materials Are Used
Extremities Gloves & Hats
Many styles include 90%+ recycled fabric content with no compromise on warmth, waterproofing, or wind resistance
