Freestanding 3 Season Tent with Two Doors and Two Porches

The Wild Country Panacea 2 is a freestanding, 3 season, 2 person tent built around an external hub pole system that maximises interior space while keeping the overall weight at 2.85kg. Two full-size doors and two porches give both occupants their own entry point and gear storage, which makes a real difference on multi-day trips where you are sharing a tent.

Designed by Terra Nova's UK team, the Panacea 2 sits in Wild Country's Classic Series. It is aimed at trampers, cycle tourers, and weekend campers who want a reliable, roomy tent that pitches quickly and handles three seasons of NZ weather without complaint. The freestanding design means you can pitch it on hard ground, platforms, or anywhere pegs are difficult to place, then peg it out afterwards for extra stability.

Key Features

External hub pole system. A single one-piece alloy pole with an integrated cross-piece creates the tent's structure from the outside. This hub design maximises headroom and usable floor space compared to standard crossed-pole setups. The pole clips directly to the flysheet, so the whole tent goes up as one unit.

Freestanding design. The Panacea 2 stands up on its own once the pole is in place. This is a significant advantage on hard ground, wooden tent platforms, or rocky campsites where driving pegs is difficult. Peg it out with the included guylines for full stability in wind.

Flysheet-first or all-in-one pitching. The inner tent clips to the inside of the flysheet, so you can pitch the fly first and attach the inner underneath without it getting wet. In dry conditions, pitch the whole thing together in one step.

Two doors and two porches. Each occupant has their own door and porch. No more climbing over your tent partner at 2am. Both porches have enough space for a pack, boots, and cooking gear.

Trekking pole compatibility. Flysheet pockets on both sides accept standard trekking poles to add extra bracing in windy conditions. The handle end tucks into the pocket with the tip in the ground. This is optional but useful on exposed campsites.

68D polyester ripstop flysheet (4,000mm HH). The Stormtex flysheet is fully taped at all seams for complete waterproof protection. The 4,000mm hydrostatic head rating handles sustained heavy rain.

68D polyester groundsheet (5,000mm HH). The Aqua Stop groundsheet is rated to 5,000mm HH with a bathtub-style wall to prevent water creeping in from wet ground.

Multiple door configurations. Both flysheet doors can be fixed open, half-open, or fully closed depending on conditions. Roll them back for ventilation on warm evenings or seal everything up when the weather turns.

Real-World Use Case

The Panacea 2 is a strong choice for 3 season tramping and camping across New Zealand, from Great Walk tracks like the Abel Tasman and Milford to backcountry campsites on the Te Araroa. The two-door layout is particularly appreciated by couples and tramping partners who value having their own side of the tent.

The freestanding design earns its keep on DOC campsites with hard-packed or gravelly ground where tent pegs are a struggle. You can move the tent around to find a flat spot before pegging it out. At 2.85kg packed, it is heavier than ultralight options but the trade-off is genuine liveable space, better headroom, and two porches rather than one.

The 50 x 20cm packed size is larger than a tunnel tent at this capacity, which is typical of freestanding designs. It fits comfortably in a 60 to 65L pack but will take up more room than a tunnel-style shelter. If weight and pack size are your top priorities, look at the Blizzard 2 instead. If space and liveability matter more, the Panacea 2 delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Wild Country Panacea 2 freestanding?

Yes. The hub pole system creates a self-supporting structure that stands up without pegs. You should still peg it out and use guylines for stability in wind, but the tent can be moved and repositioned before being secured.

Can I pitch the flysheet first to keep the inner dry?

Yes. The inner tent clips to the inside of the flysheet. You can pitch the flysheet first by clipping the pole to the fly, then attach the inner underneath once the shelter is up. In dry conditions, pitch both together in one step since the inner is pre-attached.

How do the trekking pole pockets work?

The flysheet has pockets on both sides designed to accept a standard trekking pole. Tuck the handle end into the pocket and push the tip into the ground. This adds lateral bracing to the tent in windy conditions. It is optional and the tent performs well without trekking poles in moderate weather.

Is the Panacea 2 suitable for winter use in New Zealand?

It is rated as a 3 season tent, designed for use from spring through autumn. It will handle cold temperatures and heavy rain, but is not designed for sustained high winds, snow loading, or above-the-bushline winter camping. For 4 season use, look at the Wild Country Blizzard 2.

How does it compare to the Wild Country Blizzard 2?

The Panacea 2 is a freestanding 3 season tent with 2 doors and 2 porches, weighing 2.85kg. The Blizzard 2 is a non-freestanding 4 season tunnel tent with 1 door and 1 porch, weighing 2.35kg. Choose the Panacea 2 if you want more space, dual entry, and freestanding convenience. Choose the Blizzard 2 if you need 4 season protection, lower weight, and better performance in extreme wind.

How long does it take to pitch?

The single hub pole system is quick to assemble. Most users can have the tent fully pitched and pegged out in 8 to 12 minutes. The colour-coded pole ends and clip-on attachment points make the process straightforward even if you are new to the tent.

Will two people and their gear fit comfortably?

Yes. The hub pole design pushes the walls outward, creating more usable floor space than a standard crossed-pole dome at a similar footprint. The two porches provide separate gear storage for each occupant, keeping the sleeping area clear.

What pegs are included?

The tent comes with alloy V-angle pegs weighing 12g each. These are lightweight and hold well in soft to moderate ground. For harder ground or exposed alpine sites, consider upgrading to heavier-duty pegs.

Wild Country — Gear Standards

Technologies

The materials, treatments, and design standards built into Wild Country gear — and why they matter on the trail.

Solution Dyed Fabrics icon
Sustainability

Solution Dyed Fabrics

What Is Solution Dyeing?

Solution dyeing adds pigments directly to the polymer solution before the yarn is formed. Unlike traditional dyeing — which soaks finished fabric in dye baths — solution dyeing locks colour in at the fibre level.

Why It's Better for the Planet

80–90% less water used

No rinsing or dye baths needed

Less energy consumption

No repeated heating or drying cycles

Fewer chemicals

No dyes, mordants, or effluents

Performance Benefits

Fade Resistance

Colour embedded in fibre — won't wash out or fade under UV

Improved Durability

Fabrics are often stronger and more abrasion-resistant

Cleaner Supply Chain

Less wastewater, fewer emissions, more consistent results

Trekking Pole Compatible icon
Design

Trekking Pole Compatible

Versatility for minimalist, fast-and-light adventures.

Some Wild Country shelters are designed to be pitched using standard trekking poles, removing the need for dedicated tent poles and reducing pack weight.

Benefits

Simplified packing

Fewer components to carry or lose

Lighter overall load

Ideal for thru-hikers, fastpackers, and ultralight travellers

Dual-use gear

Trekking poles double as structural support

Look for this feature on select tarp tents, bivvies, and minimalist shelters across the Wild Country range.

PFC-Free Treatments

What Are PFCs?

PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) are man-made chemicals used to create water, oil, and stain-resistant finishes in outdoor gear. While effective, they persist in the environment and are slow to break down.

Environmental & Health Concerns

Persistent in nature

PFCs don't degrade easily — trace amounts found in water, soil, and wildlife worldwide

Bioaccumulative

Some PFCs build up in human and animal tissue, raising long-term health concerns

Increasingly regulated

Regulations tightening globally, with many brands phasing out long-chain PFCs

Does PFC-Free mean less performance?

No. Wild Country's in-house and third-party testing ensures all waterproof garments and tent flysheets meet rigorous hydrostatic head and repellency standards — with or without PFCs.

Recycled Materials icon
Sustainability

Recycled Materials

What Are Recycled Materials in Outdoor Gear?

Recycled materials in Wild Country products primarily come from post-consumer waste — such as used plastic bottles — processed into high-quality polyester fibres, then spun into durable, lightweight fabrics.

Where Recycled Materials Are Used

Extremities Gloves & Hats

Many styles include 90%+ recycled fabric content with no compromise on warmth, waterproofing, or wind resistance

Select Tents & Accessories

Recycled textiles or trims incorporated without compromising tear strength, weight, or weather resistance

Why It Matters

Reduces Waste

Diverts plastic waste from landfill and gives it a second life

Lowers Carbon Footprint

Recycled polyester can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 30% vs virgin polyester

Supports Circular Design

Moving toward gear that minimises resource use without compromising performance

Waterproof Guarantee icon
