Wild Country Tents | Reliable Camping and Tramping Tents by Terra Nova

About Wild Country

Wild Country is the camping-focused brand from Terra Nova Equipment, one of the UK's most respected outdoor gear manufacturers. Based in Derbyshire, England, Terra Nova has been designing and testing tents and outdoor equipment for over 20 years. Wild Country takes that same design expertise and applies it to a range of tents built for reliability, ease of use, and real-world value.

Where Terra Nova's own-name range targets ultralight expeditions and extreme alpine conditions, Wild Country is designed for a broader audience: trampers, weekend campers, cycle tourers, families, and anyone who wants a well-built tent without paying expedition prices. Every Wild Country tent is designed by the same UK team that develops Terra Nova products, using the same design standards and testing processes.

Wild Country Tent Series

Wild Country tents are organised into three series, each designed for a different type of use:

Specialist Series. The most technical tents in the Wild Country range. These models use higher-spec materials and designs suited for year-round use, including 4-season tramping, expeditions, and extended trips. They offer a strong balance of low weight and liveable space for users who need a dependable shelter in demanding conditions. Models include the Blizzard and Trident.

Classic Series. Tried and tested designs for the outdoor enthusiast who values quality and reliability in a compact, easy-to-pitch tent. Classic Series tents are well suited to backpacking, cycle touring, Scout and Duke of Edinburgh groups, and weekend trips. Models include the Helm Compact, Hoolie Compact, and Coshee.

Entry Series. Great value tents for occasional or first-time campers. These models are easy to pitch, pack down small, and provide dependable Wild Country performance at a lower price point. Suited to campsite use, casual backpacking, and festival camping.

Why Choose Wild Country Tents

Designed by Terra Nova's UK engineering team. Wild Country tents are not a rebadged import. They are designed in Derbyshire by the same team that builds Terra Nova's award-winning expedition shelters. That means proper pattern engineering, rigorous material selection, and real-world testing in harsh conditions.

Durable, weather-resistant fabrics. Wild Country tents typically use 68-denier polyester ripstop with polyurethane coatings for the flysheet and groundsheet. Flysheets are rated to around 4,000mm hydrostatic head and groundsheets to 5,000mm, providing strong protection against heavy rain and wet ground.

Superflex alloy poles. Most models use 8.5mm Superflex alloy poles that are lightweight, flexible, and resistant to bending or snapping under load. Colour-coded pole sleeves and clips make pitching fast and straightforward.

Practical ventilation. Half-mesh inner doors and apex vents help reduce condensation buildup, which matters on multi-day trips where drying out is not always an option.

Compact pack size and low weight. Backpacking models like the Helm Compact 1 weigh around 1.85 to 1.99kg with a pack size of approximately 35 x 17cm. Light enough to carry on the trail without dominating your pack.

Wild Country Technologies

Wild Country and Terra Nova share a commitment to improving both performance and environmental responsibility across their product range. Here are the key technologies used in current Wild Country tents:

PFC-Free Water Repellent Treatments. PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) have traditionally been used to create durable water repellent (DWR) finishes on outdoor gear. While effective, PFCs persist in the environment and are slow to break down. Wild Country has moved to PFC-free treatments across their tent range. In-house and third-party testing confirms that PFC-free flysheets and groundsheets still meet rigorous hydrostatic head and repellency standards, so waterproof performance is not compromised.

Recycled Materials. Many current Wild Country tents use recycled fabrics for the flysheet, inner, and groundsheet. These materials are primarily made from post-consumer waste such as used plastic bottles, processed into high-quality polyester fibres. The recycled textiles maintain the same tear strength, weight, and weather resistance as virgin materials.

Solution Dyed Fabrics. Solution dyeing adds pigment directly to the polymer before the yarn is formed, rather than soaking finished fabric in dye baths. This process uses 80 to 90% less water and produces significantly less wastewater and emissions compared to traditional dyeing. Solution dyed fabrics also tend to be stronger, more abrasion-resistant, and more colour-fast over the life of the tent.

Trekking Pole Compatibility. Select Wild Country models (such as the Halny Elite 2) feature zippered flysheets that allow dual awning setups using standard trekking poles. This removes the need for dedicated tent poles on those sections, reducing pack weight and adding versatility for minimalist, fast-and-light trips.

Wild Country Tents for NZ Conditions

New Zealand's outdoor conditions can change fast. A fine morning on the Routeburn can turn into sideways rain by lunchtime, and backcountry campsites on the Kepler or Heaphy often sit exposed to wind and moisture. Wild Country tents are built to handle exactly this kind of variability.

The 3-season models in the Classic and Entry Series suit the majority of NZ tramping and camping from September through to April. For winter trips, high-altitude alpine conditions, or exposed South Island terrain, the Specialist Series 4-season models (such as the Blizzard) provide the extra rigidity and weather protection needed to handle snow loading, sustained wind, and freezing temperatures.

The Helm Compact and Hoolie Compact ranges are particularly popular with NZ trampers and cycle tourers because they balance weight, pack size, and weather resistance in a way that suits multi-day trips on Great Walk tracks and backcountry routes.
