Grounding products are designed for general wellbeing and comfort. They are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Individual experiences vary.
If you are currently under medical supervision or taking medication, talk to your healthcare provider before starting a grounding routine. Some users report changes in how they feel after regular grounding, which may affect your medical test results or require medication adjustments.
Who Should Consult a Doctor First
Blood-thinning medication (e.g. warfarin/Coumadin). Some research suggests grounding may have a natural blood-thinning effect. If you take blood thinners, monitor your blood levels closely and speak with your doctor before using grounding products regularly.
Blood sugar medication. Grounding may influence blood sugar regulation. If you take anti-diabetic medication, check with your doctor to determine whether a dosage adjustment is needed.
Thyroid medication. Grounding may affect thyroid function, which could alter how your body responds to thyroid medication. Consult your healthcare provider if you are on thyroid hormone treatment.
Anti-inflammatory medication. Because grounding may reduce inflammation, those taking anti-inflammatory drugs should monitor their response and consult their doctor about potential dosage changes.
Multiple medications or complex health conditions. If you take several medications or manage ongoing health conditions, discuss grounding with your healthcare provider before starting. Changes in physiological function from regular grounding may interact with existing treatments.
General Guidance
Start slowly. Begin with 20 to 30 minutes per day and increase gradually based on how you feel. If you notice any unexpected changes, pause and consult your healthcare provider.
Research into earthing and grounding is ongoing. While early studies and user reports are encouraging, the science is still developing. Always prioritise professional medical advice over general wellness information.
What is earthing (grounding)?
Earthing, also known as grounding, is the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth's surface. When you walk barefoot on grass, sand, or soil, your body absorbs the Earth's natural electrons through your skin. Grounding products like mats and sheets are designed to replicate this connection indoors by linking to the earth pin of a wall outlet.
How does a grounding mat work?
A grounding mat has a conductive surface (usually carbon-infused PU leather or silver fibre fabric) connected to an earthing cable. The cable plugs into a standard NZ/AU 3-pin wall outlet and connects to the earth pin only. No live electricity flows through the mat. When your bare skin touches the conductive surface, a path to earth is created through your home's grounding system.
Is grounding via a wall outlet the same as using an external grounding rod?
Yes, they work on the same principle. Modern NZ homes have a grounding rod buried outside the property, connected to the earth pin on every mains socket through the domestic wiring system. Plugging a grounding mat into your wall outlet connects you to that same earth point.
Do all NZ homes have a mains earth connection?
A mains earth connection is required by law in New Zealand and is almost universally present. If you are concerned about the wiring in your property, an inexpensive socket tester (available at most hardware stores for around $15 to $20) can verify whether the earth connection is working correctly.
Is it safe to ground myself through a wall outlet?
Yes. Our grounding products connect to the earth pin only and include built-in protection resistance in the earthing cable. No live electrical current passes through the mat. If a socket is mis-wired, the protection resistance limits current to a safe level. If you have any doubts about your wiring, use a socket tester or ask a licensed electrician to check.
What can I expect when I start grounding?
Individual experiences vary. Some people notice they feel more relaxed or sleep more comfortably within the first few sessions. Others find the effects are more gradual and become noticeable over days or weeks of consistent use. Think of grounding like any other wellness habit: small, regular sessions tend to produce the most noticeable results over time.
How can I experience the benefits of earthing?
You have two main options. The first is to spend time barefoot outdoors on natural surfaces like grass, soil, sand, or gravel. Wet surfaces are more conductive than dry ones. Note that asphalt, vinyl, and wood are not conductive. The second option is to use indoor grounding products such as mats, sheets, or pillow covers, which connect to earth through your home's grounded outlet.
Is earthing a new concept?
No. Humans have always had direct contact with the Earth's surface through barefoot walking and sleeping on the ground. The modern concept of using grounding products to restore that connection indoors was developed in the late 1990s and has gained growing interest since then.
Is grounding safe for people on medication?
If you take medication, consult your healthcare provider before starting a regular grounding routine. Some users report changes that may interact with certain medications, particularly blood thinners, blood sugar medication, thyroid medication, and anti-inflammatory drugs. See the Health Advisory tab for specific guidance.
Should I disconnect grounding products during a thunderstorm?
As a general precaution, yes. While the risk is extremely low, it is sensible to disconnect any grounding device from the wall outlet during an active thunderstorm, the same way you would unplug other sensitive electronics.
